rolex pepsi bezel review
In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.
However, even bigger news is that the new steel Pepsi uses the latest version of the GMT movement: caliber 3285, which replaces the cal. 3186 used in the last aluminum bezel version (and which is still in use in other GMT-Master II watches, including the white gold Pepsi ref. 116719BLRO).
In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.Whether crafted from Bakelite, aluminum, or Cerachrom, the classic red and blue Pepsi bezel is the classic choice for a Rolex GMT watch. It looks great on top of a vintage stainless steel GMT-Master or a modern 18k white gold GMT-Master II and looks equally at home when paired with either an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet.Rolex released the first Pepsi bezel made from Cerachrom in the form of the 18k white gold ref. 116719BLRO on an Oyster bracelet. However, it would still be several more years until the company would satisfy collectors’ demands for a ceramic Pepsi bezel on a stainless steel GMT-Master II watch.
The newest version of the Pepsi-bezel GMT Master Il brought a host of changes, but how does it stack up to the original? Jack Forster.
When Rolex unveiled the first GMT-Master (reference 6542) in the mid-1950s, the watch came equipped with a bidirectional rotating bezel with a two-tone Bakelite insert featuring radium luminous markings. Bakelite was the world’s first entirely synthetic plastic that was lightweight, relatively durable, and easy to mold into different shapes. The movement offers an impressive 70-hour power reserve, a significant upgrade from its predecessor. The GMT function allows for independent adjustment of the hour hand, facilitating easy changes between time zones without affecting the accuracy of the watch. Upon its launch in 1955, the Pepsi’s bezel was made of Plexiglas and the red-and-blue color and the white track were printed on the underside. From 1959 to 2007, Rolex produced the bezel in aluminum with colors created using an anodizing process. The automatic movement operates at 4Hz (28,800bph) and offers 70 hours of power reserve. Additional features include Rolex’s anti-magnetic Parachrom hairspring and their Chronergy balance wheel. Operating the 3285 automatic movement is a pleasure and certainly an upgrade on the previous generation GMT-Master II’s movement.
The Rolex Pepsi GMT Master II is a 40mm watch and uses a patented "Triplock" crown that fastens the case as tightly as a submarine hatch. This keeps the movement, the Rolex caliber 3186 well protected. However, even bigger news is that the new steel Pepsi uses the latest version of the GMT movement: caliber 3285, which replaces the cal. 3186 used in the last aluminum bezel version (and which is still in use in other GMT-Master II watches, including the white gold Pepsi ref. 116719BLRO).In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.
